Las migraciones menonitas al norte de México entre 1922 y 1940

Resumen

En este artículo se analizan los factores que dieron lugar a las migraciones de menonitas a México desde el otorgamiento del privilegium a este grupo por el gobierno de Álvaro Obregón en 1921 hasta la presidencia de Lázaro Cárdenas. Se examina la historia de este grupo étnico-religioso desde sus inicios, durante la reforma protestante en Europa, hasta su llegada a México. Se consideran los motivos por los cuales el gobierno de Obregón les concedió el permiso para establecerse en México y el privilegium que ellos consideraban esencial para sus propósitos, así como las actitudes del gobierno y de los pobladores de Chihuahua al respecto. Se concluye con una discusión sobre los intentos del gobierno federal bajo los presidentes Plutarco Elías Calles y Cárdenas para anular el privilegium y sus resultados.ABSTRACTThe article analyzes the factors that led to Mennonite migrations to Mexico from 1921, when the government of Alvaro Obregón granted the group a privilegium, to the administration of Lázaro Cárdenas. It focuses on this ethnic religious group’s history, since its start during the Protestant Reformation in Europe until its arrival in Mexico. The article considers the Obregón government’s motivations for granting Mennonites the right to settle in Mexico and the privilegium, which the group considered essential for its purposes, and it also examines the attitudes of the government and people of Chihuahua regarding this. It concludes with a discussion of the federal government’s efforts under Presidents Plutarco Elías Calles and Cárdenas to revoke the privilegium, and the outcome of those efforts.
